Prepare for Success
SET THEM UP FOR SUCCESS
DIET: Make dietary changes needed to help your child succeed. No food/drinks for 2 hrs prior to lessons and ABSOLUTELY no apples, peaches or pears during training. I can’t stress this enough. This is SO important to making floating easier! There are other “gassy” foods to avoid as well but these are the most important. Please note that most food pouches are apple based and have negative effects on babies learning to float.
SWIM SUITS: Gather swim diapers needed for the 2 layer rule for students not potty-trained. I recommend 2 re-usable swim diapers OR a disposable under a re-usable. The outside layer MUST HAVE snug closed elastic on all openings. I highly recommend the Happy Nappy Swim Diaper or one like them. Please also have a bag for your dirty diapers if you use my can, otherwise please take them with you. All kids potty trained can wear any type of swim suit that is comfortable.
THREE TOWELS: You must bring 3 towels, 2 for your child to lay on after lesson and one to cover up with to keep your child warm. The added layers help with pool deck safety.
EMOTIONAL MODELING: Be positive and cheer your child on. When you show confidence in them, they’ll feel more confident. Please avoid making negative faces, sounds or gestures. If you can’t keep yourself upbeat, please wear sunglasses and smile with your poker face. Otherwise, walk away for a few mins so as to not affect your child’s lesson negatively. Sometimes I ask parents to go around the corner and watch where the student can’t see them. Often times this helps take the child’s attention away from the parents and toward the lesson.
ISR PARENT BOOK: To help you prepare for your child’s lessons, we invite you to download and read the ISR Parent Resource Book for information about lessons, and helpful water safety information. The ePRB may be downloaded to your computer or mobile device using the following link: http://goo.gl/GVLKNH
WARNING: Avoid using flotation devices for recreational swimming times. The only times you should use life jackets is when you are around lakes, rivers, ponds and the ocean. KNOW that if you choose ISR for your child and then put them back in puddle jumpers or flotation devices for recreational swimming, you are directly countering what they are learning in lessons. It is not worth investing in ISR if you continue their use for recreational swimming. In the event you choose the use of these devices during or after lessons, please know the interference they cause can result in the break down of their self rescue skills due to the vertical posture these devices create. The vertical position is the drowning position. Please do not foster this position in your child and expect to keep them safe around water. Especially, if they find themselves in the water alone. **There is no such thing as drown-proofed, watch your children around water at all times.
ATTENDANCE POLICY : Please understand you are committing to a daily lesson that likely cannot be filled in your absence. You will need to commit to paying for your time even if you miss. If you are not able to commit to the full session time frame, please wait until another session where you can. MAKE UP LESSONS are only given for instructor cancellations. Missed lessons for scheduling conflicts are not made up. A sick day here and there is also not made up. Prolonged illness make up lessons will be determined on a case by case basis and do require MLU (Medical Lesson Update) with ISR RET and a Dr’s note.
Please know there is no such thing as drown proof.
Please keep a close eye on all children in and around water.
